Bugis Plus is a hotspot for both retail therapy and eating, though it’s got a bit more of a rep as a shopping place. It’s super trendy and modern, perfect for picking up the latest styles. 

But since it’s part of the bigger Bugis area, it’s already well-known for being a foodie paradise in Singapore. It’s safe to say it’s got a solid food scene, thanks to the food I’ll be recommending in this listicle.

Suki-Ya

If you’re into steamboat buffets, you’ve got to try Suki-Ya at Bugis Plus. It’s like a little slice of Japan with those maple leaves decor. 

You cook up thin slices of meat, veggies, and whatever else you fancy by dipping them in a boiling pot right at your table. You absolutely can’t miss the sukiyaki and butaniku soup bases, and those cheese balls are a must. 

It also has a salad bar where you can grab your greens, along with mushroom balls and different kinds of noodles. Plus, you can whip up your sauce concoctions at the cool sauce bar. 

Pro-tip: There’s usually a queue around lunchtime, but it’s totally worth it. 

Astons

When I hit up Astons, I feel truly spoilt for choice. It’s got all sorts of combos that let me mix and match different meats all at once. 

The beef steaks, whether medium or medium rare, always hit the spot. A great array of sides like mac and cheese, onion rings, baked potatoes, fries, and mashed potatoes go well with the protein.

It’s a steakhouse, sure, but don’t sleep on Astons’ chicken and fish because they’re seriously good stuff.

Pro-tip: There’s an average of 15 to 20-minute wait time to get your food, which isn’t bad.

JINJJA Chicken

For all K-pop fans, JINJJA Chicken is a total vibe. It’s got Korean music videos playing all day, so you can jam while you eat. 

It serves up tasty Jinjja Chicken as wings or drumlets, and you can grab them by the half or whole. I tried the signature Jinjja wings tossed in yangnyeom (spicy) sauce—sweet with just the right kick of spice, but not too hot.

And if you’re into noodles, you can’t skip the Jjamppong. It’s this rich, spicy seafood noodle soup that’s got layers of flavours to it.

Pro-tip: JINJJA Chicken is now Halal certified!

Poulet

Poulet has changed my mind about French food being pricey. This place rocks an open-kitchen style and keeps it chill with most dishes under S$20! 

“Poulet” means chicken in French, so of course, its star dish is the Poulet Roti (roast chicken). The chef brines the chicken for a whole day with a traditional recipe, then slowly roasts it until it’s perfectly golden.

I found its flavour to be deep, with a hint of citrus that gives a pleasant layer of taste. 

Pro-tip: For a delicious starter, try the caramelised French onion soup with cheesy croutons. 

Pizzamaru

If you’re into pizza but want to keep it on the healthier side, check out Pizza Maru. It’s a unique Korean pizza joint that’s all about health and wellness.

The place uses a fragrant green tea dough that’s different from anything I’ve tried before. The chefs also jazz up their dough with stuff like flaxseed, chlorella, barley, and a bunch of other nutritious grains, making it super wholesome.

The truffle mushroom cheese pizza was a standout, boasting an incredible flavour blend and a perfectly crispy crust that left me wanting more.

Pro-tip: For a snack, the crispy onion tartar and full wings come in five pieces that are delightfully crispy and satisfying.

Rocku Yakiniku

When my friends and I are up for a lively dinner, we go to Rocku Yakiniku. The place is all about rocking out while you grill your own yakiniku—hence the name “rock-you” Yakiniku. Live bands belt out everything from Japanese to Mandarin pop-rock tunes.

As for the food; the all-you-can-eat buffet is a steal starting from S$24.90++. You get unlimited helpings of over 30 types of meat, plus appetisers, salads, veggies, and desserts. We’re talking U.S. short plate, beef chuck roll, pork collar—you name it!

Pro-tip: It can get a bit noisy when the band is playing, so you might have to speak up a bit.

Lau Wang Claypot Delights

Lau Wang Claypot really hooked me with its killer sauce. It’s quite addictive. I’m all about its clay pot chicken and the long bean with tofu combo, especially the spicy version. 

The spice hits just right without masking the delicious sesame sauce the team uses. Each pot is cooked up individually, so you get generous portions that are still easy on the wallet.

I also discovered that little kids love the steamed egg and fried fish dumplings here. It’s really a family-friendly place.

Pro-tip: There might be a long queue during weekday lunch hours, but the efficient staff keeps it moving quickly.

Typhoon Cafe

Typhoon Cafe totally nails that cosy Taiwanese cafe vibe right here in Singapore. It’s a chill spot without any fuss, perfect for a casual meal.

Some of its must-tries include the steamed barramundi with mushrooms in Hong Kong Sauce and the clay pot sambal sauteed clams. But I recommend the Taiwan lu rou rice topped with pork floss and a side of pickled veggies. 

The portions are massive, and the gravy is thick, not sticky. Plus, the dish doesn’t skimp on the pork belly chunks. 

Pro-tip: For a refreshing dessert, try the mango soufflé—soft, jiggly, and fluffy, served with mango ice cream, fresh mango, and mango sauce. 

Una Una

Una Una’s signature unagi sauce comes straight from Japan so you know it’s the legit good stuff. The restaurant also has this cool double-dipping trick where it bastes the unagi twice in the special sauce while it’s grilling over charcoal. 

The unagi comes out perfectly seared, giving you that crispy, sweet skin. And there’s this jelly-like layer between the skin and the meat that’s just addictive.

Pro-tip: Una Una also offers a range of affordably priced Japanese favourites, including sashimi, rice bowls, and sushi rolls.

If you’re like me and love having options with Japanese curry, give CoCo ICHIBANYA a try. You can customise your meal when you order.

Pick your topping, choose how much rice you want (less rice saves you a buck, more rice costs a buck extra), and set your curry spice level. Choices are mild, standard, and five different spice levels to fire up your taste buds.

Also, don’t miss the Wagyu beef steak curry priced at S$10 à la carte. It’s absolutely shiok! The beef is medium-rare, soft, juicy, and just melts in your mouth.

Pro-tip: There’s also a kid-friendly menu with non-spicy options, perfect for children eager to try Japanese curry.

Xin Wang is the place if you’re into that spicy-sweet curry vibe. Its chicken curry with bread and curry beef brisket hot pot with rice are some of my go-tos.

But also try the pork cutlet with curry ramen which is a killer combo for anyone who loves their Western grub with a curry twist. You get a crispy pork cutlet and veggies on springy la mian, all smothered in that rich, signature curry gravy.

Pro-tip: For a snack, try the simple bread for S$1.90. It’s crispy and light, served with jam and butter, and pairs well with their not-too-sweet hot barley.

Seoul Yummy

Check out Seoul Yummy if you’re in the mood for some proper Korean grub. It’s this cool, laid-back spot that serves up some seriously hearty stews and classic Korean dishes and is ideal for groups of diners.

Its signature Daebak Army Stew is loaded with stuff like sausages, ramen, and veggies all in a tasty broth. 

We had the seafood mini army stew too, and its noodles were perfect, the soup was smooth, and it was chock-full of shrimp, clams, sausage, and veggies.

Pro-tip: Try the Samgyetang—a tasty chicken soup that’s slow-simmered with fragrant herbs and super tender chicken.
