Art, Eats, and Iconic Views! The Best Things to Do at Esplanade Singapore

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay opened in 2002 and quickly became Singapore’s cultural crown jewel. Its durian design sparked plenty of debates, but it’s now a beloved icon of the city.

Sitting right by Marina Bay, it’s more than just a pretty face. It’s a hub for world-class performances and local art!

Having spent hours exploring its nooks, I’d say it’s where creativity meets some seriously good vibes. Let me show you around!

Things to See and Do

See live performances

If you’ve never been to the Esplanade’s concert hall, you’re missing out on a world-class experience. The acoustics are so flawless that even a whisper sounds like a masterpiece—perfect for orchestras, musicals, and everything in between.

For something more intimate, the theatre studio is your go-to. I once caught a play there, and it felt like being part of the performance—raw, up-close, and unforgettable!

But who says world-class performances have to cost a limb? At Esplanade’s concourse, I’ve stumbled upon free gems like soulful acoustic sets, cultural dance showcases, and even jazz quartets.

Lastly, the Esplanade’s outdoor theatre is a treat for the whole family. Think live performances with Marina Bay’s dazzling skyline as your backdrop! I once caught a captivating dance showcase there, and let me tell you, the mix of music, movement, and cool evening breezes was pure magic.

Pro-tip: Arrive 15–20 minutes early to snag a front-row seat at the concourse for the best view and sound experience.

Engage in creative play

PIP’s PLAYbox at Esplanade is every kid’s dream hideout. I brought my niece here, and she didn’t want to leave! With arts and crafts, storytelling sessions, and a cosy reading corner, it’s a creative wonderland designed just for the little ones.

Parents, this spot is a lifesaver when you need a break. While the kids unleash their inner Picasso, you can sneak a breather and enjoy the stunning Marina Bay views nearby.

Pro-tip: It’s handy to pack a water bottle, their favourite colouring tools (if they have any), and a light sweater, as indoor spaces can get chilly.

Drink in stunning rooftop views

The Esplanade rooftop terrace is a hidden gem. I stumbled upon it after a show and was blown away by the panoramic Marina Bay views. As the sun sets, the skyline lights up, making it the perfect spot for stunning photos (or a quiet moment to yourself).

Pro-tip: Visit after dark for a breathtaking view of the glittering Marina Bay Sands. It’s a free postcard-worthy moment!

Stroll along the waterfront

A stroll along the Esplanade waterfront is like walking through a postcard—Marina Bay Sands on one side, the city skyline on the other. I once wandered here at dusk, and the golden hour vibes were absolutely dreamy.

The path connects you to iconic landmarks like the Helix Bridge and Merlion Park, making it a scenic adventure.

Pro-tip: Visit at sunset for the best lighting and cooler weather, and wear comfy shoes for the walk.

Attend seasonal events

Esplanade’s seasonal festivals are like the city’s heartbeat—vibrant, dynamic, and always a good time. I once attended Moonfest and was swept away by traditional Chinese opera and lantern-making workshops that even my kids enjoyed.

From the electrifying Baybeats to the cultural extravaganza of Huayi, there’s something for everyone!

Pro-tip: Check out the event schedules page to get a heads-up on upcoming festivals.

For easy and yummy meals, I always gravitate towards Toast Box. The eggs are perfectly boiled, and the bread is toasted just right—crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside.

We typically savour the classic kaya toast and indulge in the cheesy ham and egg thick toast, both absolute winners.
