Your Complete Guide from Singapore to Bintan Island for a Stress-Free Escape

Having made the trip myself, I can confidently say Bintan Island is the perfect weekend escape from Singapore. Just an hour away by ferry, it offers everything from tropical adventure to luxurious relaxation, all in one stunning destination.

From snorkelling in crystal-clear lagoons to savouring fresh seafood at kelong restaurants, Bintan truly has something for everyone. I’ve put together this guide to help you plan your trip and make the most of this idyllic island getaway!

Traveling to Bintan Requirements

✔ Passport validity – You don’t want to be caught at the ferry terminal with an invalid passport! Make sure yours is valid for at least six months from your arrival in Bintan—better safe than sorry.

✔ Visa requirements – As someone from a visa-exempt country, I breezed through immigration without a hitch. Check if you qualify for visa-free entry, or prepare IDR 500,000 for a Visa on Arrival. It’s quick and easy!

✔ Proof of onward travel – I learned the hard way that a return ticket is non-negotiable. Be sure to have it ready to show, as it’s a must for smooth entry into Bintan.

✔ Health protocol – Thankfully, my vaccination certificate got me through without issues. Keep updated on health requirements like vaccines or apps like PeduliLindungi—things can change quickly.

✔ Additional considerations Travel insurance was my safety net during the trip, and I highly recommend it. Also, don’t forget essentials like printed itineraries and some IDR for tips. It makes life so much easier!

Ways to Get from Singapore to Bintan Island

  • Ferry services – The ferry is my go-to for getting to Bintan. It’s fast, affordable, and surprisingly scenic. In just about an hour, you’re whisked away from Singapore’s hustle to Bintan’s tropical vibes.

Economy Class: One-way fares start at S$57, with round-trip tickets at S$90.

Emerald Class: One-way fares begin at S$84, with round-trip tickets at S$144.

      • Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal – This terminal is perfect if you’re near Changi or prefer a quieter check-in process. I love how smooth and efficient it is, making it a stress-free start to the journey.
      • Harbourfront Ferry Terminal – When I’m in the city, HarbourFront is super convenient with great public transport links. The terminal’s amenities also make waiting for the ferry a little more enjoyable.
  • Flying – While less common, flying to Bintan is ideal if you want to skip the ferry. It’s quick, and connecting flights to Tanjung Pinang’s airport are available from nearby cities.

One-way fares for these connecting flights start at approximately S$200, with round-trip fares beginning at around S$400.

  • Private yachts – If you want to splurge, a private yacht is the ultimate luxury experience. I tried it once, and nothing beats the thrill of sailing through pristine waters in style.

Boatbookings offers one-way private yacht transfers to Bintan, with rates ranging from S$4,000 to S$7,000 per day, accommodating up to 9 guests.

Circasail provides a four-day, three-night Bintan Island charter covering approximately 140 nautical miles, priced at S$13,500 for up to 8 guests.

Things to See, Expect, and Do

Embark on a Mount Bintan hike

Hiking Mount Bintan was an unforgettable adventure through lush rainforests, where every step brought the sounds of nature to life. The climb was moderately challenging, but reaching the summit to panoramic island views made every drop of sweat worth it. It felt like being on top of the world!

For anyone planning to go, I recommend booking through Bintan Tour Holiday, which offers guided hikes with experienced local guides. They know the best routes, point out hidden flora and fauna along the way and ensure a safe and rewarding trek. You can book directly on their website.

Check out cultural attractions

Pulau Penyengat, off the west coast of Tanjung Pinang Riau, is a living museum of Malay heritage. From the iconic Sultan of Riau Grand Mosque, built with egg-white mortar, to royal mausoleums and palace ruins, the island offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history.

I suggest pairing it with visits to other cultural gems like the Avalokitesvara Graha Temple, a serene Buddhist site with a towering Kwan Yin statue, and traditional villages or markets.

I also recommend booking The South Bintan Heritage Tour, which explores Tanjung Pinang, Penyengat Island, Senggarang, and the 500 Lohan Temple in a full-day journey through Bintan’s cultural highlights.

Snorkel, kayak, wakeboard, and swim

Snorkelling at White Sands Island was pure magic. The water was so clear I felt like I was swimming in an aquarium! Between kayaking and just relaxing on the pristine shores, it was the perfect escape for both adventure and tranquillity.

Over at Trikora Coast, the vibe was completely different but equally stunning. The secluded, picturesque beaches and calm waters made it ideal for wakeboarding or simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings.

Go on a mangrove discovery tour

Drifting through the mangroves on a serene boat ride is enchanting. As the sun set, fireflies lit up the trees like fairy lights, while monkeys and kingfishers made surprise appearances, making the tour unforgettable.

For a flexible option, GetYourGuide offers a combined mangrove discovery and fireflies night tour. This allows you to experience the mangroves during the day and witness the enchanting fireflies at night. Bookings can be made here.

Visit the Sea Gypsies Village

Visiting the Sea Gypsies Village is stepping into a timeless way of life. The stilted houses over the water were fascinating to explore, and watching the villagers’ traditional fishing techniques was both humbling and eye-opening.

One of the highlights was chatting with the locals and learning about their seafaring culture and daily routines. It was a peaceful, enriching experience that offered a rare glimpse into a community deeply connected to the sea.

Ayam Presto Bude Nino is a gem for budget-conscious travellers. The crispy chicken was so good I finished it all, and the tender meat practically melted in my mouth.

The otah was fresh, with bits of fish and a hint of sotong (squid), and the fragrant chilli packed a spicy punch. The staff doesn’t speak a lot of English but a lot of pointing, smiling, and gesturing goes a long way in this quaint eatery.

Saffron at Banyan Tree Bintan is perfect for a romantic dinner. We celebrated an anniversary there and loved it!

The lotus degustation menu made up of around 7 courses was incredible, starting with extra appetisers and a complimentary ginger drink with rice crackers.

Saffron’s elegant setting, with its warm lighting and ocean views, made the evening feel extra special. The service was impeccable, and while it’s on the pricier side, the experience was absolutely worth it for a special occasion.
